Vestas cuts 110 jobs in Colorado

DENVER - More layoffs are coming to wind turbine manufacturer Vestas about a month after it held a job fair in Colorado Springs.

The company announced Thursday it was cutting about 10 percent of its manufacturing workforce in Colorado, or roughly 110 jobs.

Vestas blamed the battle in Congress over a tax credit for wind generators. Congress last month granted a last-minute one-year extension of the $12 billion credit. But Vestas said that came too late for many of its customers, who stopped ordering the turbines Vestas builds at plants in Windsor and Brighton.

Vestas last month cut the work week at the Windsor and Brighton plants, where blades are manufactured. It said it will shift the remaining employees to 40-hour weeks. It added that it hopes the wind turbine market will stabilize during the rest of the year with the credit in place.

The cuts do not impact Vestas' nacelle factory in Brighton or the tower factory in Pueblo.

In fact, in mid-January Vestas held a job fair in Colorado Springs looking for welders, painters and assemblers so it could ramp up production at its Pueblo plant. The company said it had struck an agreement to provide wind towers to other companies.

According to the Denver Post, Vestas had 1,700 employees at the start of 2012 but that has dwindled to 1,000 workers.
