Malaysian wildlife officials say 14 dead pygmy elephants were found last month in Borneo, apparently poisoned by chemicals used by farmers on the country's massive palm-oil plantations.

Malaysian wildlife officials say 14 dead pygmy elephants were found last month in the wilds of Sabah Province, apparently poisoned by chemicals used by farmers to keep pests from eating the palm fruit grown on plantations that blanket vast swaths of the countryside.
In once instance, a 3-month old baby elephant was photographed nuzzling its mother, who lay on the ground next to three other corpses. For activists, the image is emblematic of nature?s losing battle with man in and around the farms.
Favored in developing countries for its versatility and long shelf life, palm oil is now found in more than half of processed foods in Western supermarkets, from cosmetics to Girl Scout cookies. Surging global demand has generated billions in profits for Indonesia and Malaysia, the world?s first- and second-largest producers, bringing prosperity to once poor corners.
The boom is changing the complexion of Borneo, the resource-rich island they share that is one home to one of the oldest rainforests on earth. But environmental groups say the palm oil boom is driving the expansion of plantations deeper into hyper-diverse tracts of forest, accelerating global warming and forcing rare species like the?pygmy elephant and orangutan into deadly confrontations with humans.
In a statement following the elephant report, Dionysius S.K. Sharma, executive director of World Wildlife Fund-Malaysia, said the ?central forest landscape in Sabah needs to be protected totally from conversions? and called for "frequent and large-scale patrolling" of forests to protect elephants. Yet he conceded this would be a "massive task" given the remoteness of the terrain and large areas involved.?
The scale of the plantations is massive. Take a flight from Kota Kinabalu, the provincial capital, to Lahad Datu, also known as ?Palm City,? and permaculture reigns: Palm plantations sprawl for miles on end, occasionally pocked with the smokestacks of large processing facilities. The largest are owned by agribusiness giants like Sime Darby and Wilmar International, with clients that include top consumer goods companies Unilever and Nestle.
Thanks in part to new US laws mandating the removal of oils rich in trans-fats, business has never been better.
In 2011, the export of palm oil and palm-based products netted the Malaysian economy $27 billion, a fivefold increase over the past decade. With such profits at hand, the Malaysian government wants to double the area under cultivation by 2020.
This is welcome news to longtime residents of Lahad Datu, the coastal?town that has been transformed in years from a crime-ridden backwater to an investment-friendly hub. Real estate prices are soaring, investors are pouring in and the streets are safer than ever, replete with fast-food franchises and shiny hotels. ??This place is opening up, finally,? says Arnan Angkut, at a bustling seaside teashop. ?We are doing much better than before because of palm oil.?
But this kind of enthusiasm could spell long-term trouble for communities in the region and beyond.
A joint study published in October by Stanford and Yale universities revealed that land-clearing operations for plantations in Borneo have emitted more than 140 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2010 alone, equal to annual emissions from about 28 million vehicles. Over the past two decades, about 6,200 sq. mi. of primary and logged forested land have been destroyed in Borneo.
Activists say that palm oil deforestation and hunting have already combined to reduce Bornean orangutan populations to half the total of the 1980s. At this rate, some predict the iconic animal could be extinct within years.
For its part, the pygmy elephant, a rare sub-species of the African elephant, is in even greater peril: WWF-Malaysia estimates there are about 1,200 left in the wild. And Malaysian wildlife authorities have said they expect to find more dead elephants as they comb the jungle.

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) ? The fourth and likely final day of Oscar Pistorius' bail hearing opened on Friday, with the magistrate then to rule if the double-amputee athlete can be freed before trial or if he has to remain in custody over the shooting death of his girlfriend.
The prosecution is expected to complete its arguments opposing bail. The defense rested on Thursday, and Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair can issue a ruling on bail at any time after arguments finish.
Pistorius is charged with one count of premediated murder over the Feb. 14 killing of Reeva Steenkamp. He says the shooting was accidental because he thought she was a dangerous intruder inside his home.
Steenkamp's Valentine's Day killing has seized the world's attention and there was intense focus Friday on if Pistorius would be released, and if so, with what conditions.
Pistorius' hands trembled as he said "good morning, your worship" as the court session began in Pretoria Magistrate's Court, in South Africa's capital.
Pistorius' longtime coach Ampie Louw said before proceedings began that he is considering putting his runner back in training if he is granted bail to allow him to "get his mind kind of clear."
Louw said he realizes that the Olympic athlete might not be emotionally ready to give any thought to running.
"The change is that he is heartbroken, that is all," Louw said in the courtroom, surrounded by reporters and television cameras. "For me it is tough to see that. Not to be able to reach out and sit next to him and say 'sorry, man, it was a terrible accident.' But I cannot do it, I must just sit here in court and that's all.
"The sooner he can start working the better." said Louw, who was the person who convinced the double amputee to take up track as a teenager a decade ago.
Nair will decide if Pistorius is freed with conditions or if he is held until trial. Pistorius faces the sternest bail conditions in South Africa because of the seriousness of the charge, meaning his defense lawyers have to prove there is an "exceptional" reason for him to be freed.
He has been held at a police station in Pretoria since last week, but suspects who are denied bail are typically held in a prison.
Defense lawyer Barry Roux argued on Thursday that the evidence backs up Pistorius' statement that he shot through a toilet door at his home because he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder, killing her by accident.
"I think there will be a level of shock in this country if he is not released (on bail)," Roux said in court.
Opposing bail, prosecutor Gerrie Nel argued Pistorius was too willing to shoot. The prosecution says Pistorius planned to kill his 29-year-old girlfriend, a model and budding reality TV star, after an argument in the early hours of Valentine's Day.
"The reason you fire four shots is to kill," Nel said.
Louw said he might put Pistorius ? who overcame the amputation of his lower legs as a baby to compete at last year's London Olympics ? back on a morning and afternoon training routine if he is freed, believing it might help him to be able to run track again.
"You must give him space," the coach said.

AMRITSAR, India (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron has raised the possibility of diverting hundreds of millions of pounds from foreign aid to defence and security.
Faced with anger in his ruling Conservative party about further possible defence cuts at a time when he says Britain must spend 0.7 percent of gross domestic product on foreign aid, Cameron told reporters he was interested in exploring ways to use money earmarked for foreign aid for wider security purposes.
He said the department for international development - whose budget for foreign aid is set to top 11 billion pounds by 2015 - already worked closely with the foreign and defence ministries, but that more could be done.
"If you are asking me can they work even more closely together, can we make sure that the funds we have at our disposal are used to provide basic levels of stability and security in deeply broken and fragile states, then I think we should," he told reporters on Wednesday during a visit to India.
"Can we do more, can we build on this approach? I am very open to ideas like that."
Britain deploys thousands of troops in Afghanistan and his comments could allow the government to use funds originally intended for foreign aid for what it regards as peace keeping, easing the strain on public finances.
That might placate some MPs in Cameron's party who regularly ask him how he can justify spending so much on foreign aid at a time when Britain's budget crunch is forcing the closure of hospitals, fire stations and police stations.
Britain's gross government debt was 89 percent of GDP in 2012, up from 44 percent in 2007, according to the International Monetary Fund's World Economic Outlook database.

DENVER - More layoffs are coming to wind turbine manufacturer Vestas about a month after it held a job fair in Colorado Springs.
The company announced Thursday it was cutting about 10 percent of its manufacturing workforce in Colorado, or roughly 110 jobs.
Vestas blamed the battle in Congress over a tax credit for wind generators. Congress last month granted a last-minute one-year extension of the $12 billion credit. But Vestas said that came too late for many of its customers, who stopped ordering the turbines Vestas builds at plants in Windsor and Brighton.
Vestas last month cut the work week at the Windsor and Brighton plants, where blades are manufactured. It said it will shift the remaining employees to 40-hour weeks. It added that it hopes the wind turbine market will stabilize during the rest of the year with the credit in place.
The cuts do not impact Vestas' nacelle factory in Brighton or the tower factory in Pueblo.
In fact, in mid-January Vestas held a job fair in Colorado Springs looking for welders, painters and assemblers so it could ramp up production at its Pueblo plant. The company said it had struck an agreement to provide wind towers to other companies.
According to the Denver Post, Vestas had 1,700 employees at the start of 2012 but that has dwindled to 1,000 workers.

SPOILERS for today?s comics below:
I don?t mean that John Byrne has received two offers of marriage from men over the last year. Though I know to what extent some people will go to get original comic art by the man.
No, I mean that last year, we had Astonishing X-Men, in which Northstar decided to pop the question to a certain boyfriend of his. And then got married in a big media ceremony.
And then there was today?s proposal from Batwoman to Maggie Sawyer, revealing her secret identity as Kate Kane in the process.
Both same-sex proposals, both had the superhero popping the question to the civilian and both?
Had characters created by John Byrne. Northstar in Uncanny X-Men, and Maggie Sawyer in Superman. Both were written by Byrne to be gay, though decades ago he may not have expected to see stories regarding same-sex marriages to be possible in the comics in question. He?s a man who has never been Eisner nominated, not even the Hall Of Fame, but his work, often ahead of its time, has a habit of surprising, even decades later.
It?s a small thing, but I thought it was worthy of a tip of the hat.
And thanks to Pedro for prodding me.

Animal scientists say a raw meat diet is a good source of protein for cats, but pet owners may need to supplement with other nutrients.
In a new paper in the Journal of Animal Science, researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium analyzed the value of raw meat diets for cats and exotic felids. The researchers used several tests to evaluate the nutrients in meat from bison, cattle, horses and elk.
To test how the different diets affected cats, the researchers collected blood serum and fecal samples from domestic cats and captive African wildcats, jaguars and Malayan tigers. The researchers also used cecectomized roosters to analyze amino acid digestibility in the different diets. Cecectomized roosters have had an organ called the cecum removed, which allows scientists to better analyze amino acids in their waste.
They found that raw meat diets met many nutrient requirements for cats, but there were some gaps. None of the diets contained the recommended levels of linoleic acid, the horsemeat did not provide the levels of arachidonic acid recommended for kittens, gestating females and lactating females.
This research is important for animal scientists, zoos and pet owners.
The researchers explain that captive tigers, jaguars and African wildcats were traditionally fed horsemeat-based raw diets.
"With the closing of horse abattoirs in 2007, the availability of quality grade horsemeat in the United States has decreased, increasing the need for research on the digestibility and composition of possible alternatives," write the researchers.
There is also a growing trend of raw meat diets for domestic housecats. Kelly Swanson, associate professor in animal science at the University of Illinois and coauthor of the study, said the researchers are "a bit wary" of pet owners feeding homemade raw diets. He said pet owners risk exposing cats to increased pathogens and nutrient imbalances.
Pet owners often feed trimmed cuts of meat. These cuts lack fat, which is crucial in feline diets. According to the researchers, if pet owners feed raw meat diets, they will likely have to supplement it with other nutrients, including appropriate sources of fat and essential fatty acids.
A high-protein diet can also change the types of microbes in the gut. The researchers write that increased protein fermentation in the bowel may lead to more "odiferous" feces, depending on the digestibility of the protein.
Joe Taft, director and founder of The Exotic Feline Rescue Center in Center Point, IN, said he feeds raw meat to the 225 large cats at the center.
"We feed the cats meat with hide and fat and bone still on it," said Taft.
Taft aims to recreate their wild diet, but he also makes changes to keep cats healthy. Cats with renal problems are given chicken, which is lower in protein. Taft also gives the felines vitamin supplements.
Taft said that though felines will eat "ripe" meat, his staff makes sure their raw meat is as fresh as possible. This caution can reduce the risk of pathogens in the meat.
The researchers recommend future studies on sources of fiber in raw meat diets. They also recommend studies on the concentration and digestibility of amino acids in different raw meats.
###
The paper was titled "Evaluation of four raw meat diets using domestic cats, captive exotic felids, and cecectomized roosters." It can be read in full at journalofanimalscience.org.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - London elbowed its way past Hong Kong to regain the title as the world's most expensive market in which to rent office space, while Rio de Janeiro jumped to the No. 3 spot from No. 8, according to a report by global real estate services firm Cushman & Wakefield.
It was the first time since 2008 that London took the top spot. Competition for the scarce high quality office space in London fuelled office rents by 2 percent in the city's West End bolstering rents sufficiently to leapfrog over Hong Kong, according to the report on Tuesday. Office rents in the West End are expected to continue to grow as the economy improves, Cushman & Wakefield said.
At 2,137 euros per square meter, or $262 (169.8 pounds) per square foot, London's occupancy cost, which includes taxes and charges for cleaning and other services, are more than twice those of Paris, New York and Moscow.
Hong Kong's central business district dropped to second place. But the Zona Sul area of Rio de Janeiro barreled its way into the top three of the world's most expensive office locations, with rents up 43 percent over last year, the report said.
Globally, prime offices building rent rose by 3 percent, the report said. South America, particularly Brazil and Colombia, accounted for much of that growth, while many markets suffered under continuing economic uncertainty.
"Safe havens or gateway cities such as London, Hong Kong and New York continue to command high rents despite uncertain economic conditions, as they remain key markets in which to do business; while burgeoning population growth has led to rising occupancy costs in emerging markets in South America and Asia," Glenn Rufrano, Cushman & Wakefield president and chief executive said in a statement.
Rounding out the top 10 most expensive office markets at the start of 2013 compared with 2012 were:
* No. 4 Connaught Place, New Delhi; up from No 5
* No. 5 Tokyo central business district, 5 Central Wards; down from No. 3
* No. 6 Moscow central business district; down from No. 4
* No. 7 Beijing central business district; down from No. 6
* No. 8 New York, Midtown, Madison and Fifth avenues; down from No. 7
* No. 9 Sydney central business district; unchanged
* No. 10 Paris central business district; unchanged

In the midst of the impending announcement of the assumed PlayStation 4 this week, Microsoft UK executive Jon Grimes put his two cents in on the importance of the next generation announcement for the entire industry.
Grimes, in speculation of recent sales figures, took some time to reflect on this past gaming generation: "What has got us to where we are today is not going to be what gets us through the next ten years. Now we've also got to start from scratch when thinking about the future." Sony appears to already have this in mind, considering that it's seemingly directing some of its advertisement against many games that have made both the Wii and the Xbox popular, as well as the heavily-supported rumors of the complete implementation of online game-streaming service Gaikai and the new controller aesthetic.?
Grimes, speaking in regards to what the announcement means to Microsoft, also said, "They'll (customers) still want to buy the devices out there. Our job is not to get lost in the industry chatter, but to ensure that the consumers going into?stores, going online, still experience Xbox." The trend that Sony has with its consoles consistently allows each console to financially exist in the industry for ten years. So, even though Sony looks to announce a new console, the PlayStation 3 will still be part of the industry for a while due to the PS3's console longevity.?
We still have a long time to wait for the Wednesday announcement, but it's hard not to consider how the industry will respond to Sony's first step into the next generation. Microsoft had it last time with the Xbox 360, but Sony, unless something dreadful happens, all but has the lead into the next round of gaming consoles.?

BAUCHI, Nigeria (Reuters) - Gunmen kidnapped seven foreigners and killed a security guard when they stormed the compound of Lebanese construction company Setraco in northern Nigeria's Bauchi state early on Sunday, the police said.
Among those abducted were a Briton, an Italian, a Greek and more than one Lebanese worker, including two women, local government chairman Adamu Aliyu and security sources said.
Northern Nigeria is plagued by attacks and kidnappings by Islamist groups. Al Qaeda aligned group Ansaru claimed the kidnap in December of a French national who is still missing.
Bauchi Police Chief Mohammed Ladan said the gunmen attacked a police station and a prison overnight before storming the construction firm's compound in Jama'are town.
"We repelled the attack on police station and the security men at the prison yard also repelled the attack, but they burnt two vehicles in Jama'are police station," Ladan said.
"They then attacked Setraco construction, killed a local security guard and they succeeded in kidnapping people."
The Italian foreign ministry confirmed one of its nationals was taken in the raid. A spokesman for the British Embassy in Abuja said it was investigating.

Storm will affect Nevada, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico.
AccuWeather.com |
(STATE COLLEGE, PA AccuWeather.com) - AccuWeather.com reports the coldest storm of the winter with rain, low snow levels and thunderstorms will roll across California and the deserts and mountains of the Southwest through the middle of the week, threatening major travel disruptions.
The storm will begin to impact northern California Monday night and will spread to southern California Tuesday. The storm will then swing eastward across Nevada, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado Tuesday night and Wednesday with temperatures plunging to very chilly levels.
Temperatures will be slashed by 20 to 30 degrees in many locations of the Southwest U.S., when compared to highs from the past weekend.
The storm is expected to eventually affect a large part of the nation through the week with adverse weather conditions ranging from snow and ice to rain and severe thunderstorms.
The storm will bring snow and slippery travel to the Grapevine, other passes and the high deserts. With this setup, snow can cap the coast ranges throughout California.
There is the potential for people to get stuck venturing over the passes of Southern California Tuesday evening.
According to Western Weather Expert Ken Clark, "Snow will mix in as low as 2,000 feet in northern California and to 2,500 feet in southern California with several inches of snow as low as 3,000 feet."
A foot of snow can fall on the resorts in the northern Sierra Nevada with 1 to 2 feet of snow in the southern Sierra Nevada.
While the storm is not likely to unload a half a foot of rain, it can bring enough rain to be of benefit for the drought situation. Moisture will reach the deserts.
"On average, from one-third to two-thirds of an inch of cold rain is forecast to fall in the central and northern areas of California with one-half to one inch of rain in Southern California," Clark said.
Unfortunately, much of the rain will fall during a 6- to 12-hour period, which can cause flash and urban flooding. There could be a few incidents of mudslides (debris flows).
Gusty winds will kick up dust over the deserts ahead of the rain Monday night and Tuesday.
Snow can mix in around Las Vegas with the cold storm Tuesday night. Up to a half a foot of snow can fall on Salt Lake City with a foot or more possible in the Wasatch Range.
"A foot of snow or more is possible over Rim Country at elevations at and above 6,500 feet with several inches of snow around 5,000 feet," Clark stated.
Motorists should expect difficult travel along I-40 Tuesday night and Wednesday and may want to select a more southern route as heavy snow will also fall across the mountains of northern New Mexico.
Other major routes affected include I-5, I-15, I-17, I-70 and I-80 in the Southwest U.S.
There should be more than enough rain to settle the dust in the desert areas. With very little moisture over the winter, any rainfall will be welcomed.
One-quarter to one-half of an inch of rain on average is expected in the deserts.
During the middle of the week, the storm will also swing farther east over the Colorado Rockies and Great Plains.
A blizzard could affect areas from the central Rockies to the central Plains Wednesday night into Thursday. There is also the risk of a major severe weather outbreak over the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley.

Hugh Grant took to his official Twitter account on Saturday, February 16, to announce that he is a father again. The actor said he recently welcomed his second child, a son.
"In answer to some journos. Am thrilled my daughter now has a brother," he wrote on his verified account. "Adore them both to an uncool degree. They have a fab mum."
He later added, "And to be crystal clear. I am the Daddy."
Grant's spokesperson confirmed the news to OTRC.com on Saturday. There is currently no additional information about the child's birth date or name.
The 52-year-old welcomed a daughter named Tabitha in September 2011 with a woman named Tinglan Hong, with whom the actor had a "fleeting affair," the actor's spokesperson told OTRC.com in a statement at the time.
Though Tabitha's arrival was unplanned, Grant's spokesperson also told OTRC.com at the time of the birth that the actor and the baby's mother are on "very friendly terms."
"I like my daughter very much. Fantastic. Has she changed my life? I'm not sure. Not yet. Not massively, no," he told the UK's The Guardian in March 2012. "But I'm absolutely thrilled to have had her, I really am. And I feel a better person."
Grant is known for his roles in films like "Four Weddings and a Funeral," "Notting Hill" and "About a Boy." He has had past relationships with actress Elizabeth Hurley and socialite and writer Jemima Khan.

I find that decision surprising. While the idea appeals to those of us who like to binge on a series, they work on a subscription model. They're hoping HOUSE OF CARDS will be their "killer app," the must-see only-watch-it-here show that SOPRANOS was to HBO, and MAD MEN is to AMC. But if I can watch all 13 episodes in the first, free month, then why would I continue to pay the subscription? I imagine it's to get people into the store, the idea being they'll get used to Netflix. Maybe we will.
The series started promisingly. Kevin Spacey's Frank Underwood is a sort of Richard III-like House Democratic Whip. When the President rewards his loyalty with a stab in the back, he sets out for revenge and ... something. The fun of the first five or so episodes is watching him maneuver to weaken the President while building himself up. He's ruthless, and charming in a wicked way.
Then the series starts to get mushy. Things start to go wrong for his plan. He stops being smart and Machiavellian. He starts being an ordinary politician who makes political and personal mistakes. And he actually seems to be doing his job, pushing his party's interests without actually serving his own ulterior motives.
(Nonspecific hints to where the series goes in the following; consider them spoilers if you will.)
Meanwhile, his wife has abandoned her Lady Macbeth-like support of her husband, which was so interesting in the first episode, and begun pursuing her own unfathomable plans, sabotaging one of her projects in favor of another, out of what seems to be no more than spite.
A series has to deliver the goods on its pilot. The pilot promised an arc of a wicked man outmaneuvering his unsuspecting opponents. The episodes I'm watching now seem to have abandoned that promise. Now I'm watching a political soap.
As a big WEST WING fan, I'm also a bit disappointed in the politics of the show. WEST WING had a raft of political consultants who actually worked in the White House. That's why it felt so accurate.
HOUSE OF CARDS feels like Beau Willimon, the writer, is making up stuff based on watching the news. Frank Underwood has currently hitched his wagon to the Pennsylvania governor race, where he's put forward a Congressman he knows is an alcoholic drug addict with a habit of frequenting prostitutes. The guy's 30 days into recovery. The Congressman has already sabotaged his own political future by acquiescing in the closing of a Navy yard in his own district, infuriating his core supporters, at Underwood's own insistence. His whole campaign depends on people believing that he's been sober for a year, when he has been sober only for a month. How could this plan possibly go wrong? It's not a chess move, it's a crazy gamble with no guaranteed benefit.
And no Congressman smart enough to get elected would betray his own constituency publicly. He would kick and scream in public about defending his Navy yard, and then he'd sell out his district privately, if he had to. Hearings are for posturing, and communicating with the public; all the deals are done behind the scenes.
If I'm watching a cop show, I want the cops to be smarter than me about cop stuff. If I'm watching a political show, I want the politicians to be smarter than me about politics. I hate stopping an episode in the middle to have to turn to Lisa and say, "The smart way they could have done this would be...."
I don't want to diss soaps. If someone wants to put a political soap on the air, that's fine. My problem is that the show didn't start as a soap, and now I'm unclear what I'm watching the show for. If you're writing a show, you should be clear why people are watching. If you're writing BREAKING BAD, I gather, people are watching so they can yell "Walter, no!" and "Jesse, think!" If you're writing a comedy about dumb people, then you should be thinking about dumb things they can do. My objection is that this is supposed to be a show about smart people who are good at what they do... and I'm not sure it is, any more.
