PS4 'announcement is important for the industry,' according to Microsoft executive

In the midst of the impending announcement of the assumed PlayStation 4 this week, Microsoft UK executive Jon Grimes put his two cents in on the importance of the next generation announcement for the entire industry.
Grimes, in speculation of recent sales figures, took some time to reflect on this past gaming generation: "What has got us to where we are today is not going to be what gets us through the next ten years. Now we've also got to start from scratch when thinking about the future." Sony appears to already have this in mind, considering that it's seemingly directing some of its advertisement against many games that have made both the Wii and the Xbox popular, as well as the heavily-supported rumors of the complete implementation of online game-streaming service Gaikai and the new controller aesthetic.?
Grimes, speaking in regards to what the announcement means to Microsoft, also said, "They'll (customers) still want to buy the devices out there. Our job is not to get lost in the industry chatter, but to ensure that the consumers going into?stores, going online, still experience Xbox." The trend that Sony has with its consoles consistently allows each console to financially exist in the industry for ten years. So, even though Sony looks to announce a new console, the PlayStation 3 will still be part of the industry for a while due to the PS3's console longevity.?
We still have a long time to wait for the Wednesday announcement, but it's hard not to consider how the industry will respond to Sony's first step into the next generation. Microsoft had it last time with the Xbox 360, but Sony, unless something dreadful happens, all but has the lead into the next round of gaming consoles.?

Gunmen kidnap seven foreigners in north Nigeria-police
BAUCHI, Nigeria (Reuters) - Gunmen kidnapped seven foreigners and killed a security guard when they stormed the compound of Lebanese construction company Setraco in northern Nigeria's Bauchi state early on Sunday, the police said.
Among those abducted were a Briton, an Italian, a Greek and more than one Lebanese worker, including two women, local government chairman Adamu Aliyu and security sources said.
Northern Nigeria is plagued by attacks and kidnappings by Islamist groups. Al Qaeda aligned group Ansaru claimed the kidnap in December of a French national who is still missing.
Bauchi Police Chief Mohammed Ladan said the gunmen attacked a police station and a prison overnight before storming the construction firm's compound in Jama'are town.
"We repelled the attack on police station and the security men at the prison yard also repelled the attack, but they burnt two vehicles in Jama'are police station," Ladan said.
"They then attacked Setraco construction, killed a local security guard and they succeeded in kidnapping people."
The Italian foreign ministry confirmed one of its nationals was taken in the raid. A spokesman for the British Embassy in Abuja said it was investigating.

(STATE COLLEGE, PA AccuWeather.com) - AccuWeather.com reports the coldest storm of the winter with rain, low snow levels and thunderstorms will roll across California and the deserts and mountains of the Southwest through the middle of the week, threatening major travel disruptions.
The storm will begin to impact northern California Monday night and will spread to southern California Tuesday. The storm will then swing eastward across Nevada, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado Tuesday night and Wednesday with temperatures plunging to very chilly levels.
Temperatures will be slashed by 20 to 30 degrees in many locations of the Southwest U.S., when compared to highs from the past weekend.
The storm is expected to eventually affect a large part of the nation through the week with adverse weather conditions ranging from snow and ice to rain and severe thunderstorms.
California Impacts
The storm will bring snow and slippery travel to the Grapevine, other passes and the high deserts. With this setup, snow can cap the coast ranges throughout California.
There is the potential for people to get stuck venturing over the passes of Southern California Tuesday evening.
According to Western Weather Expert Ken Clark, "Snow will mix in as low as 2,000 feet in northern California and to 2,500 feet in southern California with several inches of snow as low as 3,000 feet."
A foot of snow can fall on the resorts in the northern Sierra Nevada with 1 to 2 feet of snow in the southern Sierra Nevada.
While the storm is not likely to unload a half a foot of rain, it can bring enough rain to be of benefit for the drought situation. Moisture will reach the deserts.
"On average, from one-third to two-thirds of an inch of cold rain is forecast to fall in the central and northern areas of California with one-half to one inch of rain in Southern California," Clark said.
Unfortunately, much of the rain will fall during a 6- to 12-hour period, which can cause flash and urban flooding. There could be a few incidents of mudslides (debris flows).
Nevada, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico Impacts
Gusty winds will kick up dust over the deserts ahead of the rain Monday night and Tuesday.
Snow can mix in around Las Vegas with the cold storm Tuesday night. Up to a half a foot of snow can fall on Salt Lake City with a foot or more possible in the Wasatch Range.
"A foot of snow or more is possible over Rim Country at elevations at and above 6,500 feet with several inches of snow around 5,000 feet," Clark stated.
Motorists should expect difficult travel along I-40 Tuesday night and Wednesday and may want to select a more southern route as heavy snow will also fall across the mountains of northern New Mexico.
Other major routes affected include I-5, I-15, I-17, I-70 and I-80 in the Southwest U.S.
There should be more than enough rain to settle the dust in the desert areas. With very little moisture over the winter, any rainfall will be welcomed.
One-quarter to one-half of an inch of rain on average is expected in the deserts.
During the middle of the week, the storm will also swing farther east over the Colorado Rockies and Great Plains.
A blizzard could affect areas from the central Rockies to the central Plains Wednesday night into Thursday. There is also the risk of a major severe weather outbreak over the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley.

Saudi Twitter User Arrested, Accused of Following ?Tempters?
Bader Thawab is a Saudi Twitter user who was arrested back in September 2012 after writing tweets calling for the fall of the monarchistic Saudi regime. He was also one of those who live-tweeted from the first few hearing sessions of Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPRA) trial.
Journalist Iman al-Qahtani managed to get a leaked copy of the list of charges that he faces.

Hugh Grant welcomes a baby boy, actor announces on Twitter
Hugh Grant took to his official Twitter account on Saturday, February 16, to announce that he is a father again. The actor said he recently welcomed his second child, a son.
"In answer to some journos. Am thrilled my daughter now has a brother," he wrote on his verified account. "Adore them both to an uncool degree. They have a fab mum."
He later added, "And to be crystal clear. I am the Daddy."
Grant's spokesperson confirmed the news to OTRC.com on Saturday. There is currently no additional information about the child's birth date or name.
The 52-year-old welcomed a daughter named Tabitha in September 2011 with a woman named Tinglan Hong, with whom the actor had a "fleeting affair," the actor's spokesperson told OTRC.com in a statement at the time.
Though Tabitha's arrival was unplanned, Grant's spokesperson also told OTRC.com at the time of the birth that the actor and the baby's mother are on "very friendly terms."
"I like my daughter very much. Fantastic. Has she changed my life? I'm not sure. Not yet. Not massively, no," he told the UK's The Guardian in March 2012. "But I'm absolutely thrilled to have had her, I really am. And I feel a better person."
Grant is known for his roles in films like "Four Weddings and a Funeral," "Notting Hill" and "About a Boy." He has had past relationships with actress Elizabeth Hurley and socialite and writer Jemima Khan.

House of Cards - Complications Ensue
We're about nine episodes into HOUSE OF CARDS. That's the first series funded entirely by Netflix. They made an interesting decision to make all 13 episodes available immediately.
I find that decision surprising. While the idea appeals to those of us who like to binge on a series, they work on a subscription model. They're hoping HOUSE OF CARDS will be their "killer app," the must-see only-watch-it-here show that SOPRANOS was to HBO, and MAD MEN is to AMC. But if I can watch all 13 episodes in the first, free month, then why would I continue to pay the subscription? I imagine it's to get people into the store, the idea being they'll get used to Netflix. Maybe we will.
The series started promisingly. Kevin Spacey's Frank Underwood is a sort of Richard III-like House Democratic Whip. When the President rewards his loyalty with a stab in the back, he sets out for revenge and ... something. The fun of the first five or so episodes is watching him maneuver to weaken the President while building himself up. He's ruthless, and charming in a wicked way.
Then the series starts to get mushy. Things start to go wrong for his plan. He stops being smart and Machiavellian. He starts being an ordinary politician who makes political and personal mistakes. And he actually seems to be doing his job, pushing his party's interests without actually serving his own ulterior motives.
(Nonspecific hints to where the series goes in the following; consider them spoilers if you will.)
Meanwhile, his wife has abandoned her Lady Macbeth-like support of her husband, which was so interesting in the first episode, and begun pursuing her own unfathomable plans, sabotaging one of her projects in favor of another, out of what seems to be no more than spite.
A series has to deliver the goods on its pilot. The pilot promised an arc of a wicked man outmaneuvering his unsuspecting opponents. The episodes I'm watching now seem to have abandoned that promise. Now I'm watching a political soap.
As a big WEST WING fan, I'm also a bit disappointed in the politics of the show. WEST WING had a raft of political consultants who actually worked in the White House. That's why it felt so accurate.
HOUSE OF CARDS feels like Beau Willimon, the writer, is making up stuff based on watching the news. Frank Underwood has currently hitched his wagon to the Pennsylvania governor race, where he's put forward a Congressman he knows is an alcoholic drug addict with a habit of frequenting prostitutes. The guy's 30 days into recovery. The Congressman has already sabotaged his own political future by acquiescing in the closing of a Navy yard in his own district, infuriating his core supporters, at Underwood's own insistence. His whole campaign depends on people believing that he's been sober for a year, when he has been sober only for a month. How could this plan possibly go wrong? It's not a chess move, it's a crazy gamble with no guaranteed benefit.
And no Congressman smart enough to get elected would betray his own constituency publicly. He would kick and scream in public about defending his Navy yard, and then he'd sell out his district privately, if he had to. Hearings are for posturing, and communicating with the public; all the deals are done behind the scenes.
If I'm watching a cop show, I want the cops to be smarter than me about cop stuff. If I'm watching a political show, I want the politicians to be smarter than me about politics. I hate stopping an episode in the middle to have to turn to Lisa and say, "The smart way they could have done this would be...."
I don't want to diss soaps. If someone wants to put a political soap on the air, that's fine. My problem is that the show didn't start as a soap, and now I'm unclear what I'm watching the show for. If you're writing a show, you should be clear why people are watching. If you're writing BREAKING BAD, I gather, people are watching so they can yell "Walter, no!" and "Jesse, think!" If you're writing a comedy about dumb people, then you should be thinking about dumb things they can do. My objection is that this is supposed to be a show about smart people who are good at what they do... and I'm not sure it is, any more.
