Police are looking for a pair of armed robbers behind a brazen jewelry store heist in midtown Manhattan.
Two well-dressed armed men?walked into Madison Jewelers at 400 Madison Ave. Friday afternoon and asked to see some watches.
"A gentleman came in, looking at some Rolex watches," store owner Joseph Krady told NBC 4 New York. "When I asked him, 'Which one would you like to take?' he pulled out a gun and said, 'I'm gonna take them all'."

The gunman had an accomplice, and the two took all the watches from the window display and some jewelry.?
After Krady did all he was instructed to do, the robbers pepper-sprayed him before fleeing.
"I couldn't see anything," he said. "It was the most painful thing."?
"I always feel very safe in the shop, it's a wide open area," said Krady. "It's busy, there's people around. You don't think anything like this could happen to you."??

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The family of the Rockford teen shot and killed while allegedly trying to hold up Marie's Pizza are filing a lawsuit today in federal court.
They allege that Frank Pobjecky, the off-duty sheriff's deputy who happened to be in the restaurant at the time, used excessive force and failed to provide medical care.
This is the statement released today from the family's attorney:
CHICAGO, IL (September 28, 2012) ? The family of the late Michael DeAngelo Sago, Jr. filed a lawsuit in federal court today against the off-duty police officer who shot the unarmed teenager during an incident at a Rockford pizzeria. The lawsuit alleges that Frank Pobjecky, a deputy with the Winnebago County Sheriff?s Department, violated Sago, Jr.?s civil rights, used excessive force, failed to provide medical care, and failed to summon paramedics in a timely fashion, among other things. Also named in the lawsuit are Winnebago County Sheriff Richard Meyers and Winnebago County.
The lawsuit arises from an October 2011 incident at Marie?s Pizza in Rockford, IL, during which a robbery suspect displayed a gun. That suspect was shot and immobilized by off-duty officer Pobjecky, who happened to be inside the small carryout pizzeria at the time. Pobjecky then shot and critically wounded two other unarmed adult men who were attempting to leave the scene.
After the suspect with the gun was shot and immobilized, and the two other unarmed men left the scene, Sago, Jr. tried to leave the scene. Pobjecky shot the unarmed teenager three times in the back. Sago, Jr. did not immediately die of his gunshot wounds. He fell to the ground just outside the pizzeria, which is located across from a hospital, and lay bleeding in the parking lot until he died. The lawsuit alleges that Pobjecky did nothing to provide medical care to the dying teenager.
The complaint, filed by Chicago civil rights attorney Basileios ?Bill? Foutris on behalf of the young victim?s family, charges Pobjecky and Winnebago County Sheriff Richard Meyers with wrongful death and misconduct. Pobjecky ?acted in an intentional, willful and wanton manner and/or in utter disregard for? Sago, Jr.?s safety, according to today?s filing.
In a statement released by his department several weeks after the shootings occurred, Winnebago County Sheriff Richard Meyers said that he believes that Deputy Pobjecky?s actions were ?in compliance with all department policies and procedures and he acted according to proper police training.? Sheriff Meyers subsequently nominated Pobjecky for a law enforcement award for his actions.
The victim?s family?s complaint asserts that the actions and statements of the Winnebago County Sheriff?s Department are ?sending the unmistakable message to Sheriff?s Deputies that shooting unarmed teenagers in the back is a proper act.? In doing so, according to the complaint, the policies and procedures of the Sheriff?s Department are ?directly encouraging future abuses? such as this one.
?Were it not for the gross misconduct of Frank Pobjecky, Michael Sago, Jr. would be alive today,? said Foutris. ?Michael was an unarmed minor who was running from the scene. He was a 16-year-old who was shot in the back not once, but three times even though he did not present a threat to Pobjecky,? explained Foutris.
During a court proceeding two months after the shootings, it was discovered that the entire incident was captured on the pizzeria?s video security system. Sago, Jr.?s family has not been permitted to view the video footage. Prosecutors originally objected to the videotaped evidence being shared with the defense. They successfully obtained a gag order on the video so that it cannot be shared with Sago, Jr.?s family or the media, according to Foutris.
The six-count lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages from Pobjecky, as well as compensatory damages from the other defendants. The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois Eastern Division (James Horton, as the Independent Administrator of the Estate of Michael DeAngelo Sago, Jr., Plaintiff, v. Deputy Frank Pobjecky, Winnebago County Sheriff Richard Meyers and Winnebago County, Defendants).

According to the United States, a lack of coordination among the various rebel groups taking control of growing swaths of Syria is one of their principle weaknesses.
To help remedy that, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Friday announced an additional $15 million in communications equipment to enhance cooperation among Syria?s opposition players ? from rebel fighters to the new ?revolutionary councils" popping up to administer local services in liberated zones.
Secretary Clinton unveiled the new aid package at a New York meeting of countries working with the Syrian opposition. And she used the meeting to call attention to the threat she said Iran poses with its deepening involvement in the Syrian civil war.
RECOMMENDED: Why no safe zone in Syria, yet? Five complications
?Let?s be very frank here,? Clinton said. ?The [Bashar al-Assad] regime?s most important lifeline is Iran.?
Adding that ?there is no longer any doubt that Tehran will do whatever it takes to protect its proxy and crony in Damascus,? she urged Syria?s neighbors to take the necessary precautions to stop Iran from smuggling weapons and materiel into Syria through their air space or territory.
Clinton also announced $30 million in additional humanitarian aid for Syria?s beleaguered civilian population. Experts estimate that as many as 1.5 million Syrians may now be internally displaced, while soon as many as 700,000 will have left the country.
Friday?s meeting underscored how the major Western powers supporting the Syrian opposition continue to limit their aid to nonlethal military and humanitarian assistance, as well as some advisory help for civilians. By contrast, Iran and other outside players supporting President Assad are supplying him with arms and even boots on the ground.
Recently, commanders of Iran?s Revolutionary Guard Corps bragged that they are on the ground in Syria, and US intelligence officials say Lebanon?s Hezbollah Shiite Muslim extremist organization is also operating inside Syria on Assad?s behalf, though it is not thought to be carrying out military operations there.
On the rebels? side, countries aligned against Assad ? including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar ? are said to be providing some arms, but not the heavier weaponry the rebels have been seeking.
Some critics of the Obama administration say the US should be providing more than just communications equipment, and that what the rebels really need is anti-aircraft weaponry to deter Assad?s aerial bombardments.
Sens. John McCain (R) of Arizona and Joe Lieberman (I) of Connecticut both advocate arming the rebels. The two senators also agree with critics who worry that the US risks losing influence with the forces that may eventually govern Syria.
The meeting Clinton hosted on the sidelines of the United Nations sessions this week involved a core group of about two dozen countries from the larger Friends of Syria organization. On the Syrian side, the meeting involved representatives from the Syrian National Council, the expatriate opposition organization, and also some representatives of the revolutionary councils.
The gathering took place as fighting raged in Aleppo, Syria?s largest city, where rebel forces launched a new offensive against the Syrian Army. In Washington, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said that new intelligence suggests that the Assad regime has recently moved some of its chemical weapons. All indications were that the moves were done to secure the materials, and that Syria?s stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons remain safe and under control, he said.
The meeting reflected efforts to solidify gains rebels have made. Officials in attendance acknowledge that Assad is unlikely to fall ?tomorrow,? but they insist that his loss of territory ? as well as other signs ? mean the end is approaching. As a result, these countries are focusing on preparing Syrians for ?the day after.?
?The regime still has some strengths, but it is slipping and the trend is clear,? says a senior French official. Assad ?is losing control of the ground step by step.?
The French have advocated creation of a provisional government, but ?there is still a lot to do before we have a better-coordinated opposition,? the senior French official says. ?But it does seem that at some point we need something for the Syrians and the international community to see? ? and to show that there will be a better alternative to Assad.
On Friday, Clinton acknowledged that Syria?s situation has only worsened in 18 months of fighting, but she said the path for delivering a better future is clear.
?Conditions in Syria continue to deteriorate as the Assad regime relentlessly wages war on its own people,? Clinton said. The answer, she said, is that ?the regime of Bashar al-Assad must come to an end so that the suffering of the Syrian people can stop and a new dawn can begin.?
RECOMMENDED: Why no safe zone in Syria, yet? Five complications

Revolution has all the hallmarks of the latest, great serial drama, created by Supernatural's Eric Kripke, executive produced by Lost's J.J. Abrams, and the pilot episode was even directed by Iron Man's Jon Favreau. For those of you who have yet to see it, the series takes place 15 years after a catastrophe simply known as the Blackout caused every piece of modern technology to stop working. That means no lights, no planes, no motor cars?the entire world has basically been rendered a post-apocalyptic Gilligan's Island. Charlie Matheson (Tracy Spiridakos), a spunky young woman with archery skills that would shame Katniss Everdeen, embarks on a quest with her surly Uncle Miles (Billy Burke) to rescue her brother Danny (Graham Rogers), who was taken by a militia led by Captain Neville (Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito). Gen. Monroe (David Lyons) ordered capture of the Matheson boy in order to lure his old comrade Miles out of hiding in the hopes that he might hold the key for turning the world's power back on.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) ? The Boise mayor's office is fielding numerous complaints about a neo-Nazi music festival planned for early October, the city's police department said.
Authorities have been on alert since advertisements for Hammerfest 2012 near Boise surfaced online, said Sgt. Jeff Basterrechea, who is with the police department's gang intelligence unit. The white supremacist group Hammerskin Nation plans to hold the event Oct. 6, according to the flier circulating online.
"This is a very high priority," Basterrechea said. "The mayor's office has received numerous complaints about this."
The skinhead group is rooted in Texas and has branches in Australia and Canada, according to the SITE Monitoring Service, a private intelligence firm that searches the Internet for extremist activity. The gunman who killed six worshippers at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin last month described himself as a member.
The group has not disclosed the exact location of the planned Idaho event and attempts to contact local Hammerskin chapters were unsuccessful, KTVB-TV reported (http://bit.ly/OpRh7N ). Police are working with local venues to make them aware of the group, Basterrechea said.
Former neo-Nazi skinhead Marine T.J. Leyden told the news station he previously recruited for the group with events like Hammerfest. Leyden, who famously left the movement in 1996 and has promoted tolerance ever since, said the Boise event will be used to boost the group's numbers.
"They're going to say, 'Hey, come to this show.' These kids are going to see it, they're going to get all pumped up, they're going to think it's fantastic," said Leyden, who cautioned that protesters should stay away and allow law enforcement to monitor the event.
"The group is extremely violent. The Hammerfests that they throw in different parts of the country are designed for a couple things. One it's designed for unity, but it's also designed to get people's anxiety up," Leyden said.
"My best suggestion is let law enforcement handle these guys. Don't go out and counter-protest. This is what they want. They want counter-protesters yelling, screaming and hollering out there to make them feel like they're big, tough men."
The Homeland Security Department has previously issued reports on individual foreign and domestic extremist groups such as al-Qaida and Hammerskin Nation. The Hammerskin assessment said many of the group's members received military training and fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The iPhone 5 ($199/16GB, $299/32GB, $399/64GB with contract; $649-$849 without contract) is the best iPhone ever. It takes the iPhone's traditional advantages, like the well-designed consistent hardware and interface, amazing apps, and robust retail support, and literally extends them.?If you have an older iPhone and you've been wondering, "should I upgrade?," the answer is a clear yes. Everything is better here. Better body, better screen, better camera, better mind. Compared with the iPhone 4S?, it's faster, less frustrating, and less fragile. And with even-older iPhones, there's no comparison.
In this review, we're focusing on the Verizon Wireless iPhone 5 (64GB) . We'll test the other carrier's models as we get them. For a perspective on potential differences and what the other carriers have to offer, see, "Which iPhone 5 Carrier Should You Choose?"
If you're a Verizon customer who's smartphone shopping with an open mind, I can confidently say, the iPhone 5 is a very good phone, but it's not always the best phone. The Samsung Galaxy S III and the Motorola Razr M, our other top choices on Verizon, make better in-car GPS units, for instance. I'll get to that decision at the end, but it isn't all clear-cut.
And if you just want bragging rights, well, this isn't Highlander. There can be more than one.
Physical Features
The iPhone 5 ditches the glass-sandwich design that Apple has used for two years in exchange for a lighter, slimmer quasi-unibody form. At 4.9 by 2.3 by 0.3 inches (HWD) and 4 ounces, it's notably lighter than the last iPhone and one of the slimmest phones on the market, rivaled by the T-Mobile?HTC One S. The front panel is still mostly screen: a 4-inch, 1,136-by-640 (326 ppi) display as opposed to the old 3.5-inch, 960-by-640 (326 ppi) panel. That makes the whole phone longer, but no wider. As a result, it's very easy for people with small hands and short thumbs to touch every part of the screen without stretching.
I found the new screen to be most important when playing games. Sure, it allows more room for everything?more Facebook updates, more Web page text, more calendar entries. But it really shines for games, where I've felt previous iPhones to be almost unbearably cramped and squinty. You're going to be staring at your smartphone's screen a lot; another 20 percent or so of information, with no additional hand fatigue, should be a no-brainer.
The headphone jack has moved down to the bottom of the phone, which is a slight disappointment. It means when you pull your phone out of your pocket by following the headphone cable, it'll always be upside down. Also on the bottom panel are the fairly loud speaker and the controversial Lightning connector.
The pitch of iPhone owners whining about the new Lightning port has become deafening, mostly because of Apple's blockheaded decision to charge $30 for its Lightning-to-30-pin adapter. While Lightning continues Apple's irritating policy of using non-standard connectors so it can profit from licensing, the 30-pin dock connector was nearly a decade old. It was time to go.
The sides and back of the new iPhone are considerably more handsome than they used to be. The matte black, beveled edge of the black iPhone we tested blends smoothly into the black anodized aluminum back; relatively subtle glass panels at the top and bottom of the phone cover the invisible antennas. There's also a snazzy white/silver version.?Compared with this nearly unibody design, the 4S looks clunky. The new iPhone looks more durable, too, without that big pane of glass on the back to crack.?
Other buttons and controls are where they usually are. The iPhone's raised, separated volume controls have always been a nice feature, as they're very easy to locate blindly.
RF Reception and Phone Calls
Dispel all memories of the "death grip." RF reception here was excellent in my tests, and the iPhone 5 managed to nail two calls in a weak-signal area where the Galaxy S III couldn't connect. With antennas behind glass panels at the top and bottom of the phone, it's nearly impossible to cover both of them with your hand.
The iPhone 5 isn't the world's best voice phone, but it's good enough. The earpiece is loud enough for most situations, and the sidetone adapts to background noise so you don't end up yelling. Voice quality in quiet areas is well-defined. The noise cancellation isn't nearly as good as the Audience-powered noise canceling in the Galaxy S III?some background noise leaks through, which can create problems for automated response systems, and the iPhone 5 will clip your voice a bit when it's trying to dampen heavy noise. But my voice was clear and audible over the background noise in test calls. The speakerphone is of thoroughly average volume. Just as with the mouthpiece, it does a decent, but not perfect job, of lowering background noise.
My Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset worked just fine with Siri once I figured out the rhythm; you have to wait a few seconds after pressing the voice dialing button, and then wait for the beep before issuing your command. Music, video, and game audio had no trouble making it over Bluetooth in sync, so this phone should work fine with your Bluetooth headsets and speakers.
The Verizon iPhone 5 works on a wide range of networks: according to Apple, it supports CDMA EV-DO Rev A and Rev. B (800/1900/2100MHz), UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850/900/1900/2100MHz), GSM/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and LTE (Bands 1/3/5/13/25). That's more networks than I've ever seen on a single phone. By default it will roam globally on the fastest 3G networks it can find. Verizon unlocks the SIM card slots after 60 days if your account is in good standing, so you can pop in a foreign SIM card. That is, if you can find the so-far-obscure Nano-SIM format. Nobody else uses it yet, but since Apple's a behemoth, I'm sure it will catch on.
One thing you can't do is move a Verizon iPhone to Sprint or AT&T's LTE network. (It might work with T-Mobile, though.) Sprint has (and uses) the ability to reject other carriers' phones on its CDMA network, and this model lacks AT&T's LTE bands.
3G talk time was even better than Apple promised, at nine hours, 44 minutes. That's not quite as long as the Galaxy S III's 10 hours, 43 minutes, but it's still impressive.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks drifted lower on Tuesday, putting the S&P 500 on track to continue its recent pattern of modest declines as investors seek a catalyst to justify any further gains in the wake of central banks' latest stimulus plans.
The latest moves by the European Central Bank and the U.S. Federal Reserve to stimulate their economies has put the benchmark index ahead nearly 7 percent for the quarter.
As the actions by the central banks helped contain declines, investors found little reason to justify any additional move higher.
"Overall I think with so little data both here and overseas, and not many companies with earnings reports coming out this week, I think you're likely to see limited upside. But by the same token it's been a pretty good month," said Michael James, senior trader at regional investment bank Wedbush Morgan in Los Angeles.
The S&P 500 is up 3.1 percent so far for the month, historically a difficult period for the market to achieve gains.
Materials led declines for the day, with the S&P materials index <.gspm> down 0.8 percent.

San Francisco Fed President John Williams said on Monday he expected the central bank to expand its bond-buying program next year to more aggressively combat the unemployment rate, but Philadelphia Fed President Charles Plosser countered on Tuesday the latest monetary stimulus will not do much to boost economic growth or lower unemployment.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 74.64 points, or 0.55 percent, at 13,484.28. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 11.04 points, or 0.76 percent, at 1,445.85. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 33.21 points, or 1.05 percent, at 3,127.57.
In economic news, U.S. consumer confidence jumped to its highest in seven months in September, the Conference Board said.
In addition, two separate reports showed home prices rose for another month in July, though the gains were not as strong as the previous month.

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) ? All that remains of a plan by Vietnam to build a major deep-water port is 114 exposed pilings trailing into the South China Sea and a barge full of rusty machinery.
Foreign investors stayed away from the $3.6 billion project and the indebted state-owned company overseeing it bungled the job. Earlier this month, the government accused the company of "financial incompetence" and suspended the project. The prospects for ever reviving it are dim.
The abandoned port in Southern Vietnam stands as a symbol of the inefficiency of the country's Communist rulers, and the need to reform a massive web of state-owned enterprises weighing down a once-booming economy.
Critics say it also shows how provincial governments and state-owned companies are allowed to pursue expensive, misguided and often corruption-laced infrastructure projects that result in riches for the few, but not economic growth that would benefit the country of 87 million people.
The government is asking foreign and domestic investors to bankroll its flagship Van Phong port now that the Vietnam National Shipping Lines, or Vinalines, is out of the picture. But analysts say that's unlikely because the project, which was slated to have 37 wharves, isn't near any important manufacturing bases in the region and was impractical from the start.
A better option, they said, would be developing road and rail around ports in greater Ho Chi Minh City and also developing a deep-water port near the northern city of Hai Phong. A proposed large port near Hai Phong has spurred controversy lately over escalating costs and potential dredging problems.
Vu Tu Thanh, Vietnam representative for the Washington-based US-ASEAN Business Council, said Vietnam has lost the reputation it enjoyed a few years ago for being among the most attractive destinations for investment in Asia. Would-be investors, he said, want the government to push through large-scale economic reforms that will weed out the most inefficient state businesses.
"There's nothing inherently wrong about having state-owned enterprises involved in big, capital-intensive projects like ports," said Thanh, whose advocacy group represents American companies in Southeast Asia. "The problem is: Do you have the right SOE there?"
"The typical answer in Vietnam is: You don't."
Vietnam has a coastline of 3,200 kilometers (1,988 miles) ? longer than American's west coast ? and a prime location on the South China Sea, which includes some of the world's biggest shipping channels. But its lack of linked-up infrastructure puts its ports at a competitive disadvantage compared with long established global trade hubs such as Singapore, Shanghai and Hong Kong.
As a result, manufacturers here are often forced to first send containers to those larger ports from where they are then shipped to Europe and North America.
Businessmen and observers say the port sector is a good example of how political patronage and entrenched corruption are undermining the country's development.
Vietnam has about three dozen seaports and several high-quality terminals that welcome international shipping lines, but no major port with swift connections to efficient roads and rail.
"All the coastal provinces want a deep-sea port," said Nguyen Xuan Thanh, director of public policy programs at the U.S.-funded Fulbright Economics Teaching Program in Ho Chi Minh City. "The central government needs political support from these provinces, so they don't say no to these proposals."
"Everybody wants a piece of the action," he said.
In 2010, state-owned ship builder Vinashin came close to collapse with debts of $4.5 billion, leading to a sovereign credit rating downgrade and sounding the alarm on a major pressure point in Vietnam's economy. Last month, police arrested two former senior executives at one of the country's largest banks. The banking industry has run up massive bad debts in recent years, many of them made to state-owned companies.
Vinalines has also come under scrutiny. In March, police arrested several of its executives and accused them of mismanagement in the purchase of a floating dock that resulted in losses of about $5 million. In May, government inspectors issued a report saying the company had five defaulted loans worth $1.1 billion and had bought 73 foreign vessels, many of which had run up millions of dollars in losses. Earlier this month, Vinalines' former head, Duong Chi Dung, was arrested in a neighboring country after an international manhunt.
The problems at the banks and the state-owned enterprises have played a major role in Vietnam's economy slowing from 7 percent growth in 2010 to just over 4 percent in the first half of this year. Foreign investment is also down amid inflation and the inability of the country to build the roads, electrical grid and bridges businesses need to prosper.
"It's very important that the government continues to put infrastructure very high on the agenda," said Peter Smidt-Nielsen, general director for Vietnam and Cambodia at global shipping company Maersk Line.
"If you have growing trade and you don't do anything about the infrastructure, you'll have more and more delays and congestion, and that all leads to added costs for exporters and importers," he said.

The old adage "you are what you eat" is helping scientists better understand the threatened loggerhead turtle, which is the primary nester on Central Florida's beaches.
A study published today in the journal PLOS ONE describes how scientists at the University of Central Florida used a technique that links chemical signatures of the turtles' diets and their watery environments to their migratory routes. They found the technique just as effective as expensive satellite tracking.
Little is known about the turtles, which spend 99 percent of their time in the water and return to the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge's beach to nest once every two to three years. The 13-mile-long beach is home to the second-largest population of loggerheads in the world and to about one of every four nests those turtles lay in the United States.
While other turtles' nests are increasing along the refuge's shores, the loggerheads' have been declining since 2000. The technique validated by the UCF scientists could help managers preserve the turtles' nesting grounds, migration routes and foraging grounds, all of which are critical to their survival.
"We need good information so policy makers can focus the limited conservation funds available where they can make the greatest impact," said Simona Ceriani, the UCF graduate student who led the study. "We all want our children to see these beautiful creatures and not just read about them in a book."
In addition to validating the tracking technique, the study found that the foraging area for the Florida turtles is much broader than previously thought.
"Think of these turtles as Florida tourists and snowbirds," Ceriani said. "They come and nest and then go back to lots of different places. And while we knew some went back north, we had no idea that this was a popular destination."
Based on her tracking, some turtles head for the water off the shores of Virginia and Delaware while others go to the Bahamas and the Gulf of Mexico. Some stay off the coast of Central Florida's beaches. Previously, scientists believed the majority of the loggerheads headed south.
While there are efforts to protect the turtle nests on the beaches, protecting their foraging grounds is equally important, biologists say. Many turtles die because they accidently get caught in fishing nets or encounter other dangers while out at sea.
The technique Ceriani validated should aid those efforts.
She took small blood samples from turtles at the refuge and completed a chemical analysis, which measured distinct markers known as stable isotopes. She also attached transmitters to the turtles so she could follow them using the more expensive but proven satellite tracking technique. The isotope approach proved to be equally useful, and it is much less expensive.
"By combining isotope research with satellite tracking technology, we are learning exciting information about loggerhead sea turtles," said Daniel R. Evans, a research specialist at the Sea Turtle Conservancy and co-author of the research paper. "This research helps scientists and conservation managers identify key feeding areas for loggerhead turtles and helps direct policy and regulations that protect sea turtles in these specific areas."
Ceriani said she will continue to research the migratory routes by adding more loggerheads to the study.

PATTANI, Thailand (AP) ? Suspected Muslim insurgents detonated a car bomb in southern Thailand that killed six people Friday after businesses received warnings against opening on the Muslim holy day.
The suspects opened fire on a gold shop in Pattani province's Sai Buri district, hurting no one and fleeing, police Col. Asis U-mayee said. When security forces arrived at the scene, a bomb hidden in a gas canister in a nearby pickup truck went off, he said.
A border patrol volunteer, an administrative official and four civilians were killed. Twelve police officers were among the 44 people wounded. Security officials said the pickup truck containing the bomb had been stolen in a Sept. 7 attack in which three women were killed.
Friday's explosion set fire to buildings on both sides of the road in the town's commercial area, damaging rows of wooden shop houses.
Authorities said insurgents had distributed flyers in the past two weeks to warn local traders against operating their businesses on Fridays.
The attack came after a recent high-profile surrender of nearly 100 Muslim militants to the Thai authorities.
Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat are the only Muslim-dominated provinces in the predominantly Buddhist country. More than 5,000 people have been killed in the region since an Islamist insurgency erupted in 2004.

Even though the atmosphere in lines around the world wasn't as exciting as?in past years?? in part thanks to sponsored human billboards and protesters?? the moment the clock chimed 8 a.m. at Apple's retail stores around the world, cheers erupted. The iPhone 5 has arrived.
The first person in line at Apple's flagship store in New York City is Hazem Sayed, the developer behind Vibe, an?app that lets its users broadcast anonymous messages to those nearby. He has spent well over a week sitting in front of the Apple Store on 5th Avenue and he does not regret a moment. "I'm as happy as I am tired," he tells reporters who crowd him as soon as he exits the store with his new?iPhone 5?in hand.
When asked whether he even has the energy to use his new smartphone after the long wait, Sayed smiles. "It's love at first sight," he says. "I'll stay up all night."
Love at first sight isn't eternal though. Sayed says he would consider selling his new gadget for twice what he paid, meaning about $1600 total. "The receipt is longer than the phone," he remarks absentmindedly as he holds up a crumpled slip of paper next to the device. He bought a black 64GB AT&T version of the iPhone.
Long after Sayed managed to escape the clutches of reporters, cheers continued?erupting?each time someone exited the Apple Store, with a new iPhone 5 in hand. The applause could be heard for blocks.
The iPhone 5 is the latest generation of Apple's popular smartphone. In appearance, it is similar to the iPhone 4S, its predecessor, though it has?a 4-inch display (rather than a 3.5-inch display) and is a bit thinner.?The iPhone 5 offers 4G LTE connectivity (meaning users will see faster data speeds), improved battery life, a faster processor, and a lighter body.?
Out of the box, the new smartphone will run iOS 6, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, which means that it will have?a significantly improved version of Siri, a new app called Passbook (which will store boarding passes, discount cards, and more for users), and about 200 new features.?
Much to the dismay of many, the new operating system does not offer a Google-powered Maps app, but instead uses Apple's own creation (which is not earning much praise so far).
If you are looking to pick up a shiny new iPhone 5, keep in mind that Apple's retail locations aren't the only place to get it. You can order one through the Apple website (though shipping dates are several weeks out) or through individual carriers' websites or telesales lines. You can also go to AT&T, Verizon or Sprint retail stores as well as to Walmart, Target, Best Buy and RadioShack.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Libya's newly-elected leader will join Egypt's president and the U.N. secretary-general for the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting in New York City.
Former President Bill Clinton announced the lineup for the high-power gathering of more than 50 other current or former heads of state. The meeting starts on Sunday.
President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney are expected to speak Tuesday to about 1,000 members of Clinton's nonpartisan forum, which also includes CEOs, foundation heads and philanthropists. The president's address is scheduled for 9 a.m., and Romney's at noon.
Participants will attend three days of sessions aimed at solving pressing world problems.
A potentially explosive development is the turbulence in the Middle East that resulted in the death of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens in Libya last week. At next week's conference, leaders in government, business and philanthropy will have a chance speak to Libyan President Mohamed Magariaf, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Since Clinton created the initiative in 2005, "the best way to describe the work is by looking at the impact of 2,100 commitments made that have already improved the lives of 400 million people in over 180 countries," said Craig Minassian, a spokesman for the initiative.
In 2010, the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, founded by the wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, pledged to support 100,000 female entrepreneurs with business ventures, access to mobile technology and value-added services in regions with large gender gaps: Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia.
According to a 2012 progress report ? required for each commitment ? this project is proceeding smoothly and is on track to conclude by November.
The theme of the meeting is "Designing for Impact," whose stated purpose is how the Clinton Global Initiative community "can utilize our abundance of global capacity to invent better tools, build more effective interventions, and work creatively and collaboratively to design a future worth pursuing."
A series of discussions hosted by prominent broadcast journalists are to be televised to an international audience.
At one, the role of business in global social challenges is to be addressed by three chairmen and CEOs of their respective companies: Goldman Sachs' Lloyd Blankfein, Dow Chemical's Andrew Liveris, and Cisco's John Chambers.
Obama has spoken at an initiative meeting three other times ? once as a presidential candidate in 2008, when Republican candidate John McCain also spoke, the other times as president.
